Winter weather can bring a range of winter HVAC emergencies, including power outages and frozen pipes. Therefore, Centerville Heating & Cooling believes that it’s important for every homeowner to be prepared and have a backup plan formulated so that in case of extreme winter conditions, you and your family can be kept as safe and warm as possible.

DO YOU HAVE A BACKUP PLAN IN CASE OF A POWER OUTAGE OR FURNACE MALFUNCTION?

It’s essential to have a backup plan in place to provide heat for your home. First, consider investing in a generator, which can keep your heating system running even if the power goes out. Secondly, portable heaters can also be a useful backup option but be sure to use them safely and follow all the manufacturer’s instructions. In addition, if you have a fireplace, it’s a good idea to have an emergency stockpile of firewood and fire starters on hand. Lastly, you can also keep extra blankets tucked away if you need an extra means of staying warm without electricity. Having them ready and available to grab will make all the difference in your time of need.

Another great tip to help you stay warm is to make sure all blinds and window coverings are closed. This helps to insulate your home and keep the air warm inside. You can also add extra insulation by placing blankets or towels over the windows. Furthermore, try to minimize opening and closing exterior doors, as this lets the warm air creep outside of your home.

HOW CAN YOU MAXIMIZE THE HEAT IN YOUR HOME?

  1. Maximize the heat in your home by confirming that all indoor vents are open and unobstructed. Closing or covering vents can restrict airflow and confuse your HVAC system, making it harder to keep your home warm. It’s also important to move any furniture or other objects that might be blocking the airflow of your vents.
  1. You can maintain your outdoor vents by clearing them of snow and ice to prevent lowered efficiency and potential damage to your heat pump. Clean the outdoor vents off by utilizing a broom or brush to sweep over them gently.
  1. If you have a heat pump, it’s also a good idea to clear any snow that has accumulated on top of the unit. This will help it run more efficiently and avoid damage. Don’t forget to clear away excess snow underneath and around the unit to allow for proper drainage.
  1. Don’t forget about your gas meter. Protect your gas meter by clearing snow and ice from your gas meter using a broom or brush. Just be sure to avoid using heavy objects like a shovel or snow blower, as using these could damage the meter. It’s always a good idea to keep an eye on your gas meter and pipes during harsh winter weather, as they are at risk of freezing. If you notice any issues, shut off the gas supply and call a professional to assess the situation.

By following these tips, you can be prepared to handle HVAC emergencies and keep your home warm and comfortable during the winter season.
